Reducing the risk of teenage drink driving

ISM offer secondary schools a package that educates young people and reduces the likelihood that they will drink drive. Our facilitators will train your guidance teachers to deliver the lessons across 6 weeks within their Personal Social and Health Development (PSHD) timetable.

Lesson 1

  • Discussion about the young people’s experience of alcohol
  • An explanation of the legislation regarding drink driving
  • Show a video of a young person who has been convicted of drink driving


Lesson 2

  • Explain facts about alcohol
  • Introduce the concept of units of alcohol
  • Explain how the body processes alcohol
  • Explain harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption


Lesson 3

  • Explain statistics about alcohol consumption in Scotland
  • Explain the physical and psychological effects of alcohol and it’s impact on the central nervous system
  • Explain how the brain develops in adolescence, why adolescents take risks and encourage healthy risk taking

Lesson 4

  • Explain how alcohol addiction develops and impact it can have on functioning
  • Explain the strategies the Scottish Government to tackle excessive drinking in Scotland
  • Explain the Icelandic Youth Study and its impact on reducing alcohol and drug addiction
  • Encourage young people to develop healthy habits


Lesson 5

  • Explain what thinking errors people use before and after being caught drink driving
  • Explain the psychology of drink driving
  • Use videos of young people convicted of drink driving and discuss with the young people who and what had an impact on them


Lesson 6

  • Explain the skills, attitudes and abilities of safe and responsible drivers
  • Use a real-life case study to consider what should happen to people who have been convicted of killing someone when they have been drink driving
  • Review the 6 lessons to see what the young people have learned
